OpenGL legacy is notoriously slow, optimisations can be made by building an advance renderer. Usually drawing a model then placing each one on the field as you need it then drawing the next model is faster than just iterating and drawing over each object.
Also if we separate our Renderer into its own external library we could provide an abstraction that could do both legacy and modern opengl.
