A proposal for MultiBit: A wallet that is stable and well defined with version. Then we would get rid of these problems:

Upgrades harder to newer version is hard
Changes to serialized classes break the old format
Move the wallet to another machine can fail
Upgrade of the JDK can break the wallet.
