Write down two objects or situations that refer to the same pattern if analysed from an abstract point of view, as introduced in Section "Abstraction is the key". What features do they have in common?

In the post office, people need to go to the different windows for different affairs. Also, in the hospital, people need to find different doctors because of their various symptoms.

Cooking and building furniture both consist in putting together different elements to obtain a final result; the first action involves ingredients and the second requires screws and work tools but they both allow to create one final "object" from what previously were different and separate things.

What features do they have in common?

  • Multiple small corridors connected to one another
  • Focal point/entrances are only accessed through interconnected small paths
  • Several larger open spaces like the 'piazzi' and smoking areas

A wind turbine and a hydropower plant. Both produce electricity in the same way (through a turbine generator).

A pearl and an onion. Both are made up of layers that wrap around each other over time with the growth of the animal and the plant. Furthermore, both layers have a protective function. In the pearl, the layers of mother-of-pearl protect the mollusk from a foreign body penetrating inside the shell. In the onion, the layers protect the internal bulb from external damage and drying out.
